In case you’re interested in the inconsequential details of our wedding, the dress was purchased from Target for the bargain price of $15. Matt and I then set out to tell the story of our life together through drawing. I then embroidered each design along the bottom of the dress.
Scene #1 represents the start of our relationship. Right before we met, I was enjoying my self-subsidized sabbatical at Folk School in the mountains of North Carolina (hence the basket) and Matt was teaching at KIPP Shine in Houston.
Scene #2 represents our first date. After bubble tea and an online Myers-Briggs test, we had a splendid time running through the sprinklers at a local elementary school.
Scene #3 represents the continuation of my self-subsidized sabbatical with my journey to India. I did, in fact, ride on a camel, which is extremely uncomfortable when they start running. I also slept on a cot in the dessert, which was the closest I’ve come to hypothermia.
Scene #4 represents my return to Houston and our eventual moving in together. We lived in Montrose right next to a community garden.
Scene #5 represents our move to Denver, CO, to enroll in Montessori teacher training. The small creature is a fox, which as been known to run past our front door.
Scene #6 represents the next step in our life. We are moving back to Texas, the Lone Star State. We will be bringing our dog, Hoss, who was inadvertently left out of the mural because we acquired him long after the dress was planned. [insert sigh]
